Favorite movie scenes, not necessarily in favorite movies

  • Scent of a Woman: Tango scene starring Gabrielle Anwar and Al Pacino, dancing to Por Una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel.

  • Casablanca: Ingrid Bergman says to the piano player at Rick's Cafe, "Play it, Sam. Play "As Time Goes By." The music starts. Humphrey Bogart hears the forbidden song from afar and rushes in to say, "I thought I told you never to play that song again." Then he sees Ingrid Bergman sitting there. In the evening he gets drunk and says to himself, "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."

  • Out of Time(?): George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez are trapped together in the trunk of a car. Clooney says, "If we were to meet in different circumstances...."

  • Patriot Games: Harrison Ford, near the start of the movie, springs into action to foil an Irish terrorist attack on the British royal family.

  • Mrs. Brown: Judi Dench, playing the British monarch Queen Victoria, sets the table with plates in a peasant cottage on the moor.

  • Immortal Beloved: In this movie about Ludwig van Beethoven, we see many scenes about Isabella Rosselini being interviewed as a prime candidate for having been Beethoven's Unsterbliche Geliebte or "Immortal Beloved." But when Isabella Rosselini is asked directly if she herself thinks that she must be the Immortal Beloved, she answers, "No, I don't think so," and it seems as if the movie starts all over again in search of the real Immortal Beloved.
